Light-Weight Electric Commuter Bike Motor

To design and manufacture light-weight electric commuter bike motors for the masses.  Electric motors will be easily mounted to the front hub of existing bikes, thereby turning  regular bicycles into electric vehicles.  Affordability, performance and durability are the main objectives to help people transition out of cars and into electric bicycles.  

Electric bike motors will be available through the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) and cooperative  worker-owned bike shops.  Proceeds will benefit non-profits and other alternative business models.

Awesome, I have a dead project like this that I have been waiting to find the right collaborative partners to help make a reality.  I have an open source brushless motor controller just waiting for an application, with similar design goals.  Performance, price, reliabilty.  I did sacrifice a bit on price in order to make it future proof, that is to say, the micro controller is a bit higher performance(costs more), than the minimum that is required to perform field commutation calculations for the motor.

Judging from the image, you are doing away with the disk brake entirely.  My circuit doesn't have facilities for braking yet, but I can add that without too much difficulty.

I am curious what you think about control of the motor from a user perspective.?.?  My thoughts are to create a small sensor that replaces the brake cable coming out of the brake lever.  Under braking the rider would pull on the brake lever like normal.  For acceleration the rider would push out on the brake lever and the added component that replaced the brake cable would have a bit of resistance to keep the throttle in the desired position.  Thoughts?

My offer is to fully fund this and provide a space for manufacturing, all you have to do is find a few more people willing to share the work load.
